Understanding IBC Tote Grades A and B and Beyond

In short: Grade A totes are near new in condition with a clean, benign contents history, while Grade B totes are functional but show cosmetic wear or held less desirable products. Grading blends two things: the physical condition of the bottle and cage, and what the tote previously contained.

Buying — used IBC totes

Why grading exists

Used totes vary enormously, from nearly new units that only held clean water to battered containers with an unknown chemical history. Grading gives buyers and sellers a shared language so a price reflects real condition and suitability rather than guesswork. It is the backbone of any honest used tote transaction.

There is no single universal standard body enforcing tote grades, so terms can vary slightly between suppliers. What follows is the common industry usage, but always ask a seller to define exactly what their grade includes.

Two dimensions of a grade

A meaningful grade captures two separate things. The first is physical condition: the state of the HDPE bottle, the galvanized cage, the pallet base and the valve. The second is contents history: what the tote previously held and how thoroughly it was cleaned.

A tote can be pristine physically but disqualified from sensitive uses by its history, or cosmetically rough but perfectly clean inside. Good grading tells you both, which is why a single letter is only a starting point.

Grade A totes

Grade A describes a tote in excellent, near new condition. The bottle is clear or lightly used with no cracks or heavy staining, the cage is straight with minimal rust, the pallet is sound and the valve seals cleanly. The contents history is typically benign, such as food grade or non hazardous liquids.

Because they look and perform close to new, Grade A totes command the highest used price. They suit applications where appearance, cleanliness and refill life all matter.

  • Clean, largely unstained bottle with no cracks or bulging.
  • Straight cage with minimal surface rust and intact welds.
  • Sound pallet base and a cleanly sealing valve and cap.
  • Benign or food grade contents history with good documentation.

Grade B totes

Grade B totes are fully functional but show more wear. Expect cosmetic staining, some cage rust or minor dents, and often a less desirable or industrial contents history. They still hold and dispense liquid reliably, they just do not look new and may not suit sensitive products.

Grade B is the value sweet spot for many buyers. If you are storing water, waste, non sensitive industrial liquids or using the tote for a rugged repurpose, paying for Grade A cosmetics makes little sense.

  • Visible staining or discoloration but no structural cracks.
  • Moderate cage rust or dents that do not compromise strength.
  • Industrial or mixed contents history, disclosed by the seller.
  • Fully serviceable valve and pallet, sometimes with replaced parts.

Beyond A and B

The scale does not stop at two letters. Some suppliers use Grade C or salvage for totes that leak or have failed cages, sold for parts or repurposing rather than liquid storage. At the other end sit food grade and rebottled or new units that exceed Grade A.

Food grade deserves special mention: it means the tote only ever held food safe products and meets cleanliness expectations for food adjacent use, which is stricter than simply being cosmetically clean.

Condition versus history: do not confuse them

The most common buying mistake is treating a clean looking tote as automatically safe for any product. A spotless bottle that once held a solvent may still carry trace residue in the plastic, while a stained bottle that only held detergent may be perfectly clean for many uses.

Always ask two questions, not one: what condition is it in, and what did it hold. The answers together determine whether a tote fits your product, far better than the letter grade alone.

Matching grade to use and budget

Buy the lowest grade that safely meets your need and you save money without compromise. Overbuying Grade A for a rugged water tank wastes budget, while underbuying Grade B for a sensitive product risks contamination. The right grade is the one that matches both your product and how the tote will earn its keep.

Reusing a graded tote instead of buying new is also the greener choice at every level, keeping durable HDPE and steel in service rather than in the waste stream.

Buy the right grade with confidence

Grades are a tool, not a guarantee. Understand that they blend condition and history, ask the seller to define their terms, and match the grade to your actual product and use. Do that and you buy exactly the tote you need at the best honest price.

IBC Tote Solutions grades every tote on condition and contents history and will tell you plainly what you are getting. Describe your application through our quote form or email info@ibctotessolutions.com and we will match you to the right grade.
